A Florida man has been found guilty of killing his estranged wife’s boyfriend in Silver Spring in 2021.

On Friday in circuit court, Gary Savage, 60, of Tampa, Florida, was found guilty of attempted first-degree murder, voluntary manslaughter, and two counts of use of a firearm in commission of a crime of violence, according to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office (MCSAO).

In Sept. 2021, Savage was arrested and charged for the homicide of a man from Germantown following a shooting on Baileys Court in Silver Spring.

In Sept. 2021, Savage drove from his residence in Florida to his estranged wife’s home on Baileys Court in Silver Spring, according to MCSAO. When he arrived, his estranged wife was getting into a vehicle with her boyfriend, 44-year-old Whali Shabazz.

According to MCSAO, text messages showed that Savage knew the two were together and he expected Shabazz to be at the home when he arrived.

Savage opened fire on both and killed Shabazz. He continued to shoot at his estranged wife, who took cover behind another vehicle and was not injured, per MCSAO.

Savage potentially faces life in prison. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for Nov. 17.

He claimed self-defense in court, saying he began shooting due to “perceived threat of a handgun” that Shabazz had, per MCSAO.
