Congress’ new budget includes $1 million for pedestrian safety initiatives in Olde Towne, Gaithersburg.
Rep. April McClain Delaney (MD-06) announced the increased pedestrian and bicycle safety funding in a Wednesday statement. The $1 million figure may have been higher, Delaney said, if it were not for the Democrats’ projects being, “significantly cut by the Republican majority.”
“These investments will enhance pedestrian and bicycle safety, especially for children who walk or bike to our Gaithersburg Elementary, Middle, and High Schools, reduce traffic congestion, and improve the quality of life in Olde Towne,” said Mayor Jud Ashman.
There have been 51 fatal crashes involving pedestrians so far this year in Maryland. Twenty five occurred in Montgomery County.
Olde Towne will receive the $1 million based off recommendations from the Gaithersburg 2024 Safe Routes to School study, according to Ashman.
