Germantown Man Drowns on Fourth of July

A Germantown man drowned in the Potomac River on the Fourth of July. The drowning occurred at the area known as “The Point” at Harper’s Ferry, according to a Potomac Valley Fire Company FaceBook post.

Daniel Aldazabal Cucho, 44, was fishing on the bank of the Potomac with friends, before they attemped to cross the water to a nearby rock island, according to a Maryland Department of Natural Resources spokesperson. Not soon after entering the river, Aldazabal Cuhco started screaming for help and disappeared underwater.

The Fire Company unit received numerous calls about four individuals involved, including Aldazabal Cucho. When the unit arrived, they were able to secure the safety of three individuals but called for a diver from the MDNR to help find Aldazabal Cucho.

After two hours of searching,  Aldazabal Cucho’s body was recovered. He was transported to a waiting medic on shore in West Virginia, where he was pronounced dead, according to Natural Resources spokeswoman Megan McGinn-Meals.

West Virgina medical examiners are investigating.
