‘Heaven & Earth’ and ‘Demons of Unrest’ top Montgomery County Libraries’ list of most checked out books of 2025

More than 12 million print and digital materials were checked out from Montgomery County Public Libraries last year.

Across 21 branches, customers checked out nearly 5 million digital materials (4,677,742 to be exact) in 2025, according to the library system.

But when it came to reading materials that county library card holders checked out the most, the murder mystery novel “The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store” by James McBride topped the list. “The Demon of Unrest” by Erik Larson was a top non-fiction favorite, while the book adaptation of the popular children’s show “Bluey” snagged the No. 1 and No. 2 spots for most checked out children’s books.

Overall, the library system issued 62,000 new library cards in 2025. Customers logged 362,012 computer sessions throughout the library system.
