On Monday, County Councilmember Kristin Mink posted an Instagram reel alerting the public about “multiple reports of ICE being spotted and detaining people,” along the border of Montgomery and Prince George’s counties.
She has been vocal in condemning the recent actions of ICE, both on social media and to the press. In an April X post, she called ICE’s recent actions “grotesquely celebrated by the White House.”
Mink’s report details
This reel is part of Mink’s series of updates via her social media in an effort to assist those impacted by recent ICE actions. “We are all in this together, and I will continue doing everything I can to leverage my role and platform to protect our community,” Mink told us.
In her reel, she said these ICE sightings, happening at the intersection of East-West Highway and New Hampshire Avenue, tend to occur between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m. She also urged community members to, “as much as possible, please avoid the area and stay safe.”
Mink said she received a report Monday morning regarding a detention in front of the 7-Eleven. She also received a report of a sighting at the nearby U-Haul location “a couple days ago.”
“This is a dark moment in our history”
In addition to talking about ICE sighting reports online, she told us she has “personally responded to urgent calls about potential ICE sightings.”
Mink also said she’s been taking active steps to support those affected by or concerned about ICE in their community. She said she’s been working to connect detainees to support and resources. She has also advocated for police to physically identify themselves more explicitly. “‘POLICE’ vests will soon have Montgomery County labels added,” she said.
“This is a dark moment in our history,” she said, “and good people will want to look back and say: I did everything I could to stand up and protect my neighbors.”
