In a retrial, Sophia Negroponte, 32, was found guilty Thursday of fatally stabbing 24-year-old Yousuf Rasmussen, according to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office.
The former diplomat’s daughter was accused of fatally stabbing Rasmussen in the 400 block of W. Montgomery Ave. in Rockville on Feb. 13, 2020. Negroponte and Rasmussen were acquaintances and had been arguing before she attacked him, according to police charging documents.
Negroponte, who lived in Washington, D.C., faces up to 35 years in prison. Sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 19, 2026.
She was originally found guilty in 2023 and was sentenced to 35 years, but last year, the Maryland Court of Appeals overturned the conviction, according to prosecutors.

“We thank our prosecution team and the homicide detectives with Montgomery County Police for their commitment to seeking justice for Yousuf Rasmussen and his family,” said Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy in a written statement.
“Today we are also grateful to the members of the jury, who gave careful consideration to their decision as they deliberated for multiple days before reaching a verdict. We look forward to Negroponte finally being held accountable for her actions,” said McCarthy.
