Daughter of Former Diplomat Found Guilty of Second-Degree Murder

Sophia Negroponte was found guilty of second-degree murder on Tuesday in Montgomery County Circuit Court.

Negroponte, 29, of Washington, D.C., was convicted for the death of 24-year-old Yousuf Rasmussen, of Bethesda. The former diplomat’s daughter was accused of fatally stabbing Rasmussen at a residence in the 400 block of West Montgomery Avenue in Rockville on Feb. 13, 2020.

The trial lasted nearly one month, Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy said during a press conference after the verdict. He said Negroponte faces a sentence of 40 years in prison. Sentencing is set for March 31.

Dr. Zeba Rasmussen, the victim’s mother, described him as a “kind and gentle soul,” and a “loving person” who brought family and friends “great joy.”
