Friday, January 12

Weed Warrior Workday: Volunteers work with a Weed Warrior Supervisor at the Long Branch Stream Valley to remove non-native, invasive plants or weeds on Friday, Jan. 12 from 9 a.m.-11 a.m. Registration is required. Bilingual Storytime: The whole family is invited to this 25-30 minute program Friday at the Connie Morella Library in Bethesda.  Activities include stories and activities that promote and develop language skills and imagination. These programs encourage children to develop a lifelong love of reading and learning and introduce them to the culture of reading. Space is limited and tickets are available Friday morning on a first come, first served basis at the information desk. For more information, click here.

‘Understory’ Art Exhibit: VisArts in Rockville presents the work of two local artists in the Gibbs Street Gallery through Sunday, Jan 14.  The gallery is open Friday from noon-8 p.m. The artists, Katherine Tzu-Lan Mann and Jackie Milad, will talk about their work at a reception Sunday, Jan. 14 at 2 p.m. Free, but VisArts requests an RSVP. Saturday, January 13

Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration: The city of Rockville presents the annual celebration Saturday at Rockville High School from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The free event kicks off a weekend of service and celebration of King’s legacy and founding principles. Watch a screening of the award-winning documentary “Finding Fellowship” followed by a Q&A discussion with Rev. Gerard Green at 10:15 a.m.. A panel discussion with city and county justice, equity, diversity and inclusion professionals tales place at 11:15 a.m. and a drum performance by Soul in Motion is set for 12:20-12:30 p.m. For more information, click here. Say It Loud! Play It Loud! Festival: BlackRock Center for the Arts presents a day long festival honoring Martin Luther King Jr. , Malcolm X & Aretha Franklin Saturday from 10:30 a.m.-10 p.m. Events planned include film screenings, art exhibits, a record fair, DJs, Nag Champa Art Ensemble, and The JoGo Project.  For more information and to obtain tickets for some of the events, click here.

Discovery Days: Throughout January, the Gaithersburg Community Museum presents Discovery Days, a series designed to stir the imagination and foster family involvement. Admission is free, reservations are not required. Saturday, Jan. 13 from 11 a.m.-3:30 p.m., Montgomery Parks Archaeology Office brings hands-on activities to introduce attendees to the world of achaeology. Sunday, January 14

Art Exhibit Reception: Riverworks Art Center hosts an opening reception for the “Poetry in the Sky” exhibit Sunday from 4-6 p.m. The exhibit by Claire Howard captures the many moods of winter in Montgomery County’s Agricultural Reserve. Meet Howard, explore the exhibit, and enjoy complimentary soft drinks and snacks; beer and wine available for purchase. Free. RSVP here. Washington Piano Society Winter Concert:  The Society performs works by Sibelius, Schubert, Joplin, and Chopin, Sunday, Jan. 14 at 3 p.m. in Silver Spring at the Montgomery College Cultural Arts Center. Dog & Cat Adoption Event: Lucky Dog Animal Rescue is hosting a dog and cat adoption event Sunday from noon-3 p.m. at PetSmart in Rockville. Learn about dog and cat adoption events at the Lucky Dog website here. PetSmart is located at 5154 Nicholson Lane in Kensington.

Monday, January 15 is Martin Luther King Jr. Day

MLK Day of Service Trail Clean Up: Croydon Creek Nature Center hosts a trail clean up event as part of the National Day of Service in memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Participants will work to clean up trash from the trails at the Nature Center from 10 a.m.-noon on Sunday. Day of Service featuring Metropolitan Ballet Theatre: The pre-professional dancers of Metropolitan Ballet Theatre perform a contemporary ballet performance. Young dancers in the audience may participate in a interactive portion of the performance. The Performance takes place Sunday at 11 a.m. at Gaithersburg Arts Barn. Tickets start at $8. 2024 MLK Day of Service: The Montgomery County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority hosts a number of service projects to benefit residents across the county on Monday, Jan. 15 from 9:30 a.m.-noon at the Silver Spring Civic Center.
