Montgomery County Councilmember and county executive candidate Will Jawando expressed his concerns about the impact of the current budget proposals on the public school system late Tuesday.
Specifically, he pointed to the possible job loss by MCPS employees at all levels from classroom teachers to maintenance staff as addressed by Superintendent Thomas Taylor in a video to employees on Tuesday morning.
In Jawando’s words, “Funding our schools is not a budget priority among many. It is a duty. To every parent who moved here for our schools, every teacher who chose Montgomery County over higher private school pay, every taxpayer who has invested in this system for decades, trusting the next generation would inherit something good.”
With the county facing a $189 million dollar budget shortfall, the Councilmember has worked to find the funds elsewhere in the county infrastructure.
He stated, “Every other tool must be exhausted before we ask our schools to absorb cuts…We can find the money. We can make the hard choices everywhere else. We must fund our schools.”
