Leaders Hope Homelessness in County Will Someday Be ‘Rare, Brief and Non-Recurring’

88 people who experienced homelessness in Montgomery County have died since 2020 began.

County leaders held a memorial service Wednesday at the Executive Office Building Veteran’s Memorial Plaza in Rockville to remember those who experienced homelessness and have passed away. Most community members were permanently housed at the time of their passing and all received county services.

“I hope — I know that as all of you do — that someday homelessness in Montgomery County will be rare, brief and non-recurring,” County Executive Marc Elrich said.

“And that if a community person dies, they get to die with dignity. At least in a place they think of as home, at least in a place that’s stable. Not alone, not on a street, not not knowing where to turn and feeling abandoned.”
