Legislators’ townhall addresses multiple issues

On Thursday evening, Congresswoman April McClain Delaney (Md.-6th) held a telephone town hall. Joining her were fellow democrats Sens. Chris Van Hollen and Angela Alsobrooks. Each legislator presented their thoughts on various issues confronting the country and the state. Below are excerpts from the hour-long meeting.

ICE Shooting in Minneapolis

Rep. McClain Delaney led the discussion about the events surrounding the death of Renee Nicole Good: “The killing of a 37-year-old woman at the hands of ICE agents is horrific and an outrage. And our communities deserve safety grounded in a rule of law and not fear or terror or intimidation.”

Sen. Alsobrooks also weighed in: “In an absolutely horrifying tragedy, we saw in living color this administration, who shot in the head an unarmed mother of three children who was in her car. The cruelty of this administration knows absolutely no bounds.”

Adding his perspective, Sen. Van Hollen said: ” The Trump administration has said that Renee Good, the mother of three children, was engaged in ‘domestic terrorism’… Just today, the Trump administration said that they would not allow the Minnesota authorities to participate in an investigation of what happened … So, it’s going to be absolutely essential that we all come together and demand accountability in the face of these outrages.”

Venezuela

Concerning the intervention in the Venezuelan government McClain Delaney commented: “This attack was not authorized by Congress and is clearly unconstitutional for our president to declare his intentions to run another country without our congressional authorization under Article one. These actions threatened to undermine world order and our values as Americans.”

Van Hollen objected to what he felt was the deception surrounding the Venezuelan operation: “… while members of the Trump administration initially tried to present a narrative that this was about preventing drugs from coming to the United States … the reality is that this turned out to be all about Donald Trump’s interest in getting his hands on Venezuelan oil, especially for the benefit of many of his billionaire buddies.”

Affordability

Alsobrooks talked about the everyday concerns of Marylanders. “We ask ourselves every day as a result of this administration, ‘Has your life improved?’ and I think the absolute unequivocal answer is, ‘Absolutely not.'”

For McClain Delaney, affordability was cause for a unified front. “Our families are choosing between groceries, childcare and utilities, and we’re all working hard on affordability and to address these costs as much as we can.”

Solidarity

On issues ranging from vaccinations to healthcare premiums, McClain Delaney, Alsobrooks and Van Hollen share similar objectives. “Team Maryland has stood together,” said Alsobrooks.

Listeners were granted the opportunity to ask McClain Delaney questions following the remarks.
