Libraries to Host Reading Partner Sessions

Kids in Montgomery County may soon get the chance to read with a partner at their local library.

Montgomery County Public Libraries (MCPL) will host reading partner sessions for kids in kindergarten through third grade. The program will match children with trained volunteers from the Jewish Council for the Aging, who will serve as reading partners, the county said.

“Instilling a love for reading in our young people is one of the most important things we can do to in providing great educations for our upcoming generations,” said Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich.

Kids can arrive at the following sessions with their own book or pick one on the spot, and they’ll be paired with a volunteer:

Saturday, March 2, 1-3 p.m at White Oak Library, 11701 New Hampshire Ave., Silver Spring.

Saturday, March 2, 3-5 p.m. at Wheaton Library, 11701 Georgia Ave., Silver Spring.

Sunday, March 3, 1-3 p.m. at Gaithersburg Library, 18330 Montgomery Village Ave., Gaithersburg.

“Having a reading partner often is the key to making reading fun and interesting,” Elrich said.

The county’s program honors “Read Across America,” an initiative from the National Education Association meant to advance reading materials promoting diversity and inclusion.

No advance registration is needed. Interested community members should contact Clotilde Puértolas at clotilde.puertolas@montgomerycountymd.gov for more information.
