Man Found Guilty in Fatal Easter Home Invasion Shooting

A man has been found guilty of murder in an Easter Sunday home invasion shooting that occurred last year in White Oak.

After a six-day trial, Kaleab Berhanu, 21, of Baltimore was found guilty Tuesday of first-degree murder, home invasion and other charges for the shooting death of 20-year-old Carlos Carter, according to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office (MCSAO).

Berhanu was arrested on May 4 of last year.

Per MCSAO, on April 9, 2023, Berhanu broke into the Carter’s family home in the 11000 block of Old Columbia Pike and shot Carter multiple times.

According to police at the time of the shooting, Carter was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

In a written statement, Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy said, “This victim was asleep in his bed when he was attacked. He was shot multiple times as he attempted to escape the defendant and fell at the feet of his mother and siblings. We express our deepest condolences to the family, and we thank Assistant State’s Attorneys Peter Larson and Thea Zumwalt for seeing justice served in this matter.”

Berhanu faces up to life in prison. Sentencing is scheduled for June 18, according to MCSAO.
