The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) is searching for 30 Montgomery County high school students to serve as “Vision Zero Youth Ambassadors.”

The program allows students to earn up to 35 student service learning (SSL) hours while receiving education on traffic safety. The Vision Zero Initiative aims to eliminate traffic-related injuries and deaths in the county.

“Our students are so creative, and they can have a powerful role in influencing change,” said Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich. “We know their ideas will have a real impact on helping us work toward the County’s Vision Zero goal of zero deaths through traffic safety infrastructure and programming.”

The application deadline is Dec 15., and applicants will be notified by Jan 5. if accepted.

If selected, ambassadors will participate in four in-person sessions through May. Sessions will be held from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturdays on the following dates: Feb 24., March 16., April 13. and May 11.

The sessions will occur at the Montgomery County Public Safety Building located at 100 Edison Park Drive in Gaithersburg.

“We are empowering teens to assess needed improvements to the built environment and behaviors and develop strategic programs that provide solutions. These projects have tangible outcomes that directly impact the safety and well-being of our County residents,” MCDOT Director Chris Conklin.
