On Saturday, June 27, Gov. Wes Moore and First Lady Dawn Moore hosted a celebration of the state’s #ReadMoreMaryland literacy campaign at Government House in Annapolis. Nearly 100 Maryland students including some from the county were in attendance.
First Lady Moore said in a statement the goal of the event was to encourage students to continue reading during summer break.
At the event, students participated in story time with the governor and first lady. They took part in educational activities, received age-appropriate books to take home and learned about summer reading resources available through libraries and state agencies.
Through the nonprofit organization Empowering the Ages, several Montgomery County students and volunteers were able to attend the celebration.
“Empowering the Ages has a school readiness program where we do reading. So through that program we coordinated with the #ReadMoreMaryland campaign that was happening this past spring,” Executive Director Leah Bradley told MCM.
The Moore administration also used the celebration to highlight broader literacy initiatives and investments in public education.
“Through this campaign and the record investments we’ve made in K-12 education, Maryland is doubling down on our commitment to building a world-class education system, supporting our educators, and creating opportunities for every child in Maryland to succeed,” Gov. Moore said in a statement.
According to the administration, Maryland has increased literacy achievement in recent years and continues to invest in programs designed to support reading instruction and student success.
