MCPS to Host Anti-Vaping Symposium on Saturday

Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) is holding an anti-vaping symposium on Saturday, Feb. 27 to educate the community on the health risks of vaping.

The online event is from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Youtube. The session is intended for students, parents, health care workers and all community members. The discussion will focus on the risks of vaping, how to prevent a student from doing so and the community resources available. All of the information will supplement the main address from Dr. Ruben Baler, a health scientist with the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

Dr. Baler is expected to discuss the vaping epidemic and its negative impact on adolescents. He will focus on both the mental and physical aspects of students’ health, as well as how vaping can affect a child’s future.

Also on the schedule for the symposium is a live student panel; students will discuss why their peers vape and how to provide support and resources for them to stop. Anti-vaping public service announcements created by students will also be displayed throughout the event.

Featured information from community and governmental organizations will also be presented. The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is co-sponsoring the symposium.
