Metro Announces Reopening of Yellow Line

The Yellow Line reopens on May 7, marking the end of extensive repairs to the Yellow Line tunnel and the bridge between L’Enfant Plaza and Pentagon stations.

After eight months of construction, the Yellow Line will run again starting at 7 a.m. on Sunday, May 7.

The reopening means there will be a more reliable connection across the Potomac River between Virginia and D.C. According to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), the reopening of the Yellow Line will cut back travel times by as much as 15 minutes.

Trains will run every eight minutes on weekdays and every 12 minutes after 9:30 p.m. between Huntington and Mt Vernon Square. On the weekends trains will run every 12 minutes.

The Blue+ service operating between Huntington and New Carrollton will stop once the Yellow Line reopens. Shuttle routes operating between Crystal City and L’Enfant Plaza, and Pentagon and Archives will also be discontinued with the reopening of the Yellow Line.

“I want to thank our customers for their patience while we completed this critical work to ensure safe, reliable service for decades to come,” General Manager and Chief Executive Officer Randy Clarke said in a press release. “I’m also very proud and thankful to the dedicated women and men who worked to deliver this complex project on schedule and on budget.”

Construction crews have been working to mitigate water intrusion in the steel-lined tunnel and replace older bridge bearings and expansion joints since September. During construction, the fire suppression system was upgraded. Additionally, miles of communication cables were removed and replaced.
