MoComCon Will Celebrate Diverse Voices in Fandoms Saturday

Montgomery County Public Libraries (MCPL) will host their eighth annual comic convention “MoComCon” Saturday after snow delayed the event last month. The convention is rolling out a new program to celebrate diverse voices in fandoms.

The free convention will be held in the Germantown Library and the BlackRock Center for the Arts from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The “Blerdtino@MoComCon!” or “BAM!” celebration will feature Black and Latino artists and performers throughout the day, including a 1:30 p.m. panel.

The name “Blerdtino” is a combination of the words Black, Latino and nerd, according to a county press release.

BAM! was put together by Classroom 2 Community and the Maryland State Library Agency.

“This year’s MoComCon is going to be bigger and more diverse than ever,” MCPL Director Anita Vassallo said in the release.

Speakers at the convention will discuss the evolution of Latino Comic Cons, their graphic novels, cosplays, and songwriting advice.

Cosplay lovers can participate in a cosplay parade and contest at the BlackRock Center. There will also be comic book sales, crafts, gaming, and art and essay contest throughout the day.
