Montgomery College Awarded $7.5 Million from NIST in Gaithersburg

Montgomery College received a five-year cooperative agreement award from the National Institute of Standards and Technology to provide up to 250 student placements annually at its labs in Gaithersburg.

The $7.46 million also grants research opportunities for current faculty members, according to a news release from the college.

The students who are selected with work with research mentors and receive stipends, professional development and mentoring.

Montgomery College has received NIST funding since 2012.

The NIST program is intended to increase the recruitment, retention and graduation rates of undergraduate and graduate students pursuing STEM degrees with attention to historically marginalized groups.

“The College is thrilled with this award—the second largest competitive federal award in MC’s history,” said President Dr. Jermaine Williams.

Added Dr. Sharon Fechter, senior vice president for academic affairs, “Working directly with NIST researchers, MC students are involved in cutting-edge research gaining real-world experience, while working with mentors to prepare for STEM careers.”
