Montgomery County High School Athlete of the Week: Avery Graham

Sherwood High School junior Avery Graham has gotten a taste of the state lacrosse playoffs in each of her first two years.

The Warriors got to the semifinals in 2022, losing to the eventual champion, Broadneck. Last year, a tight contest with Dulaney saw Sherwood’s season end in the quarterfinals.

Just three games into the 2023-24 campaign, the Dulaney loss last May still stands as the Warriors’ most recent defeat.

Graham is this week’s Montgomery County High School Athlete of the Week.

Each week throughout the school year, the Montgomery County Sports Hall of Fame is partnering with Montgomery Community Media to honor an Athlete of the Week from the county’s more than 40 public and private high schools.

Sherwood has looked like a juggernaut so far this season. They’ve not only won their games, they’ve left no doubt.

In the Warriors’ opening game victory against Quince Orchard, Graham scored four goals and assisted on two others en route to a 17-8 final. She added four more goals and another assist in a 14-2 rout of Montgomery Blair. In the team’s 15-3 win over Wootton Wednesday night, Graham netted her 100th career goal.

The midfielder picked up right where she left off a year ago. As a sophomore, Graham won the Montgomery County Player of the Year, made first team all-county and was one of the Washington Post’s All-Met honorable mentions.

Graham also earned similar honors as a member of the cross country team.

Sherwood is waiting for the opportunity to make good on the last two years’ shortcomings. With Graham leading the way, the Warriors will likely get that opportunity.
