More Speed Cameras, Higher Fines Coming In October

There will be 140 new speed cameras and 76 red-light cameras installed throughout the county in October.

They will be placed in school zones where the greatest number of speeders and injury-related collisions are, according to Montgomery County police.

There will be more than 55 roadside deployable cameras. The rest will be located on poles. The county signed a contract with Vitronic for the cameras, which will be placed in a combination of existing and new locations.

Since the program began, traffic cameras and other efforts have contributed to an 11% drop in serious and fatal crashes, according to the county. These actions are part of the county’s Vision Zero program.

Starting Oct. 1, speed camera fines will increase the faster a driver goes.

The current $40 fine for traveling more than 12 miles over the limit will remain. Speeding between 16 and 19 miles over the limit will cost drivers $70. Going 20 to 29 miles over the speed limit will cost $120, and traveling 30 to 39 miles past the limit will get drivers a $230 fine.

Anything faster comes with a $425 fine.
