NAACP: Board of Education ‘Scapegoating McKnight’

In a letter addressed to the Board of Education (BOE), Linda Plummer, the president of the Montgomery County chapter of the NAACP, expressed the organization’s support for Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Superintendent Dr. Monifa McKnight.

Plummer, referring to the request for McKnight’s resignation by the BOE, wrote that it is “deeply troubling that such a request would be made without a full and fair opportunity for Dr. McKnight to address any concerns which may have led to this action.”

The letter adds, “…it would appear that such a request is based on factors which are external to Dr. McKnight’s performance and comprise a politically expedient solution to address press reports about systemic failures in the MCPS process for handling employee complaints….”

Plummer accuses the BOE of “attempting to scapegoat Dr. McKnight” and adds “…expediency is rarely a means to justice and often compromises principle.”
