National Suicide Hotline Introduces New Number to Call or Text

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline has launched a new Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number, 988, which allows easier access to help through call or text. Once dialed, the caller is immediately directed to a trained counselor who has worked with the Lifeline.

The previous number, 1-800-273-8255, will remain accessible.

The hotline has existed since 2005, with a total of over 23 million callers from 2005-2021. Their crisis centers—the resource providing support to those in distress—are free, confidential, and available 24/7.

The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline has over 200 local and state-funded centers that provide both emotional support and resources for betterment. Locations for centers based on state can be accessed here.
