Nov. 17-19 Weekend Roundup: 9 Things To Do in Montgomery County

Welcome to MCM’s Weekend Roundup of events in Montgomery County. Here are nine things to do this weekend, November 17-19.

Friday, November 17

Candlelight Tours: Learn about the 275 years of history at the Agricultural History Farm Park by candlelight tonight from 6-8 p.m. Costumed re-enactors will recount the experiences of the Magruder, Newman, and Bussard families who lived on the farm. The event features live music and refreshments. Cost is $20 for ages 18 and older, $10 for ages 7 to 17, under 7 is free. For more information and to see additional tours, click here. Additional tours are scheduled for Friday Dec. 15, and Saturday, Dec. 16 with some openings. The Farm Park is located at 18400 Muncaster Road in Derwood.

Garden of Lights: Brookside Gardens annual holiday light show opens tonight and runs through December 31. Stroll through the gardens that are illuminated with more than one million lights shaped into art forms of flowers, animals and other natural elements. Hot chocolate and light snacks will be available for purchase. Tickets are $10 per person and must be purchased online for a timed entry. For more information and to purchase tickets, click here. Art Exhibit Reception: VisArts in Rockville hosts an opening reception and artist talks from 7-9 p.m. The galleries have three solo exhibitions by artists Kei Ito, Emily Francisco, Katherine Tzu-Lan Mann and Jackie Milad. Saturday, November 18

Holiday Market: The Family Room in Laytonsville is more than just a local store, it is a gathering place with events planned throughout the year. The Holiday Market features local artists, festive eats and drinks, Christmas carolers, and one of a kind gifting. Saturday, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. at 6820 Olney Laytonsville Road. Holiday Barket: Montgomery Parks hosts a dog-themed holiday market on Saturday, Nov. 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Cabin John Regional Park in Bethesda. This free event features dog-friendly accessories and gifts from seven pet-friendly vendors, community pet service agencies, and concessions for purchase. Entertainment includes music by Capital Effect, photos with the Grinch, and hiking. There is also a dog park across Tuckerman Lane where dogs may be unleashed. “Celebrating Diversity” Concert: The Rockville Concert Band presents an inclusive concert with artists from diverse backgrounds to promote an appreciation for different cultures. Sunday, November 19

Nature on Wheels Pop-Up:  A Montgomery Parks naturalist with the mobile Nature on Wheels van will be at the Josiah Henson Museum and Park for a free outdoor drop-by event Sunday from 1-4 p.m. Talk with a naturalist, ask questions and try out biology-themed activities. The Park is located at 11410 Old Georgetown Road in North Bethesda. The museum is open Sundays from noon-4 p.m. Museum admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and children.

MCM visited the mobile Nature Center of Wheels when it first launched in 2021.

Art Exhibit Reception: Riverworks Art Center hosts an opening reception for the “Of the Angels” exhibit Sunday from 4-6 p.m. The exhibit by Sheryl Massaro features 17 oil paintings paired with excerpts from Massaro’s translations of the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke. Meet Massaro, explore the exhibit, and enjoy complimentary soft drinks and snacks; beer and wine available for purchase. Free. RSVP here. Long Branch 5K Fun Run: The annual Long Branch 5K Fun Run takes place on Sunday, Nov. 19. The race starts at 8 a.m. with same day registration and packet pickup at 7 a.m. from Garland Neighborhood Park at 8601 Garland Avenue in the Long Branch neighborhood of Silver Spring.  Proceeds from the 5K benefit Discover Long Branch and the Long Branch Business League.
