Noyes Library for Young Children in Kensington temporarily closes at 5 p.m. May 21 to begin renovations. The library on Carroll Place is expected to reopen in the fall of 2027.
A groundbreaking ceremony for the new work will take place Saturday at 10 a.m.
“Noyes has always been a special place for young children and their families,” said County Executive Marc Elrich. “But the building hasn’t kept up with what people need today. If we want early learning spaces to work for everyone, they have to be accessible, functional, and able to support the kind of programming our libraries are known for.”
Renovation work includes “a comprehensive rehabilitation and enhancement of the historic facility while preserving its unique, small-scale character,” according to a news release.
Once reopened, the library will be accessible for all and have ADA-compliant restrooms and a dedicated space for library staff to prepare and deliver programming.
The attic will become a finished second floor with staff workspace, and a finished basement will be remodeled to hold programming. An elevator will be installed.
When requesting holds, Noyes patrons now must choose another library. Anyone with existing holds can pick them up through May 12.
