Officer Struck by Driver Suspected to be Under the Influence

Police said an officer is in critical condition after he was struck while trying to stop a driver suspected of being under the influence.

Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) officers were trying to stop the driver at about 3:48 a.m. Wednesday on northbound I-270 near Watkins Mill, according to MCPD.

One officer got out of his patrol car to use stop sticks, according to police, and the driver hit him. The driver continued northbound on I-270 and another officer used the stop sticks to bring the car to a stop. Stop sticks are used to deflate the tires of suspect vehicles, according to police.

Police said the officer who was struck suffered “very serious injuries” and he was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Two people in the car were taken into custody.

Northbound I-270 north of Watkins Mill was “completely shut down” after the collision, according to police.

The investigation is ongoing.
