People’s Book Opens New Chapter for Takoma Park

When Megan and Matt Bormet moved to Takoma Park a few years ago, they looked forward to visiting the local bookstore. But they were shocked to discover there wasn’t one. So, they started their own.

According to Google Bard, they are only one of two independent bookstores in the county. People’s Book can be found at 7014-A Westmoreland Avenue in Takoma Park.

The new bookstore is home to more than 12,000 books for people of all ages. It also includes sections for newspapers, magazines, graphic novels, and comic books. But the store prides itself on its inclusivity for younger readers. Owner Megan Bormet said about 40% of the store has books catered towards children and young adults.

Besides creating a bookstore where the whole family can go, Bormet says bringing the community together is what she strives for.  The Bormets wanted to make a space where you can get personal service and a book recommendation from another living person.

People’s Book is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays. The store is closed Mondays. More information about the bookstore can be found on their website.
