The Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) hosted a community celebration at the county fairgrounds Saturday to mark a milestone for the agency.

2022 marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the police department. According to MCPD, Saturday’s celebration was the largest community event the police department has ever hosted.

“MCPD was created back in 1922, when our county was a largely rural area with only about 35,000 people living here,” Police Chief Marcus Jones said in a video message

“Now we are a vibrant, diverse community with 1.1 million residents. Our first department consisted of a chief and five officers. We still have a chief, but now we also have five assistant chiefs, 1,300 sworn officers and about 500 professional staff.”

More than 30,000 people turned out as of about 3 p.m. on Saturday, MCPD wrote on Facebook.
