Police: No Evidence of Sexual Assault in Locker Room Incident at Wootton High School

Montgomery County Police (MCPD) have concluded the “serious incident” reported in Thomas S. Wootton High School football team’s locker room on Nov. 2  was not a sexual assault and has turned over the investigation to Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS).

Police were first brought to the scene after a staff member witnessed an incident in the boy’s locker room and reported it to school administration who then called MCPD. Once on the scene, police interviewed members of the Wootton boys’ varsity football team who were in the locker room and “other adults.” Police concluded that no sexual assault had taken place.

County police spokeswoman Casandra Durham said there is “no further criminal investigation regarding this incident and no charges are forthcoming at this time.”

On Nov. 11, nine. days after the incident, Wootton High School principal Kimberly Boldon sent out a letter to the Wootton community discussing the events, reassuring them there was no criminal activity, and detailing the process they took to investigate. The full letter can be read here.

Some have criticized how MCPS is handling the situation and have called for more transparency.

Attorney Tim Maloney, the representative of a 2018 Damascus High School rape case victim, told ABC 7 News. “We are deeply disturbed that the principal of the school sent out an email, instructing the football players to delete films on their cameras of this event. That essentially is the destruction of evidence and it raises serious issues of obstruction of justice,” Maloney said.

Three days after the incident, the Wootton football team lost a first-round playoff game to Magruder ending their season.
