“Coming Home” oil painting by Katherine Xue
U.S. Rep. Jamie Raskin is now accepting submissions to his annual art competition from high school students who live in Maryland’s 8th Congressional district.
The district includes Rockville, Bethesda, Potomac, Silver Spring, Chevy Chase, Wheaton, Kensington, Aspen Hill and Takoma Park.
The winning artwork will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol Building for one year with creative pieces from other congressional districts nationwide. Members of the U.S. House of Representatives host districtwide competitions each year.
In addition, the winning piece and other submissions will be displayed at VisArts art gallery in Rockville in May.
Last year, Katherine Xue, a student at Richard Montgomery High School, won first place for her oil painting “Coming Home.” MCM attended the reception and ceremony at VisArts, where Raskin announced Xue as the winner.
A panel of independent judges will review all submissions and select a winner, according to a statement from Raskin.
Some runners-up will have their work displayed in Raskin’s Rockville congressional office. All pieces will be featured in a virtual gallery.
Entries must be submitted online. The deadline is 11:59 p.m. Monday, March 30. A student information and release form is also required.
The artwork must be two-dimensional. Full competition guidelines are available here.
