Reckless Driver Who Struck Police Sergeant Sentenced

“…the last 4 hours might be among the most emotional I have spent in this building over the last 44 years.” That’s how County State’s Attorney John McCarthy described the hearing for sentencing Raphael Mayorga on Wednesday.

At a press conference in the lobby of the County Circuit Court, McCarthy announced Mayorga’s sentence of 22 years and 60 days for a speed racing spree that ended when his green Challenger rammed into Sgt. Patrick Kepp on October 18 of 2023. Kepp was attempting to stop Mayorga from speed racing on Interstate 270 when he was struck at an estimated 160 miles per hour.

The incident left Kepp a double amputee.

Now back in service and doing the traffic enforcement work he loves, Kepp made a victim statement at the hearing. This fall he returns to working with NCAA football on the sidelines for replays.
