A Gaithersburg resident became $100,000 richer playing the Maryland Lottery.

The 66-year old retired transit worker won the top prize in the Gold x50 game, according to a news release. He told lottery officials he typically buys tickets while shopping at his local grocery store. He purchased three $10 scratch-off tickets for the Gold x50 game at the Gaithersburg Safeway on Goshen Road. With a grin, he told lottery officials, “The last one I scratched was the winner. I guess I saved the best for last.”

He plans to use most of his winnings to help pay off his daughter’s college loans. He added, “The wife and I might split the rest on home improvement projects.”

The Safeway in Gaithersburg located at 20211 Goshen Road earns a $1,000 bonus from the lottery for selling the winning ticket.

Maryland allows lottery winners to remain anonymous.
