Rockville Police Seek Information in Killing of Goose

Rockville City Police seek information and video footage after they said a Canada Goose was killed by a lake in New Mark Commons.

The goose was killed along the bank of Lake New Mark around 8-8:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 24, according to a post from the Rockville City Police Department (RCPD). At least three boys around 12-15 years old were seen in the area of the goose family of four at that time. Lake New Mark is a private lake in New Mark Commons, which is a Homeowners Association community in Rockville.

The lake “has served as home to a beloved Canada Goose family peacefully for several years,” the post reads. Canada Geese are protected by law.

The geese were heard making “distressing noises” and three swam away frantically. Then, the boys ran in the direction of the bridge at or around 226-216 New Mark Esplanade.

Police said right after the boys ran, the fourth goose, a parent, was dead in the lake with severe injuries.

RCPD asks anyone who witnessed the “egregious act of animal cruelty,” has video of the boys or has any information to call 240-314-8933 or email Officer Mowell at FMowell@rockvillemd.gov

Police said the New Mark Commons community raised funds in hopes of closing the case. A $1,000 reward will be given to anyone who provides information that leads to a conviction.
