‘Santa’ Gets Police Escort to Deliver Toys to Children at NIH, Spreads Joy Along the Way

The day started early at Montgomery County Police Department’s 5th District police station in Germantown.

The first stop was Tractor Supply Co. in Poolesville, where 23 officers, joined by Santa on his ‘sleigh,’ rode their motorcycles to nine additional locations across the county. Stops included Weis Markets in Damascus, Harris Teeter at the Fair Hill Shopping Center in Olney and Target Rio in Gaithersburg.

“We had so many toys donated and we talked to so many people,” said Capt. Warren Jensen of MCPD’s Holiday Taks Force. This is the third year Jensen has led the Santa Ride in Montgomery County, and “This is the biggest turnout we’ve seen,” he remarked.

After a full day of riding and visiting different toy donation locations to collect gifts, the motorcade—with lights and sirens blaring—headed to The Children’s Inn at NIH, a place where families with children undergoing medical treatments and participating leading-edge clinical research stay.

At The Children’s Inn, Santa Claus greeted families and children, took photos, and delivered the toys. MCPD officers also spent time with families—decorating cookies, painting and sharing special moments with the young patients receiving care at the Inn.
