Silver Spring Traffic Stop Leads to Drug, Gun Charges

Kenneth Buckner | MCPD

A Washington man faces drug and firearms charges after an incident Friday night, a Montgomery County police statement said.

Kenneth Buckner, 30, of Madison Street NW, posted a $5,000 bond and was released, according to online court records.

An alcohol initiatives unit officer pulled Buckner over about 11:40 p.m. Friday at Georgia Avenue and Colesville Road in Silver Spring, police said. The statement did not specify the traffic violation.

The officer spoke with Buckner about the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle, and Buckner drove off at a high rate of speed, police said. Buckner drove through two red lights and threw an unknown object out of the passenger window of the car on Cameron Street, police said.

Buckner stopped his vehicle at Spring and Cameron streets and was arrested, police said.

Officers recovered a loaded handgun believed to be what Buckner had thrown from the vehicle, police said. Officers searched the inside of the vehicle and found suspected marijuana.

Records indicate that the gun is registered to Buckner.

Buckner faces four handgun charges, all misdemeanors that each carry a maximum penalty of three years; reckless endangerment, a misdemeanor that carries a maximum penalty of five years; and a marijuana charge, also a misdemeanor that carries a maximum penalty of six months.
