Takoma Park will not run its annual Fourth of July parade and street party because of dangerous heat conditions forecast for the holiday, organizers announced.
The decision comes as the Washington region faces an extreme heat wave, with the heat index expected to reach at least 105 degrees on July 4.
Montgomery County has declared a heat emergency through the holiday weekend, and the National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for the area.

“We feel that it would not be safe, or responsible, to ask our community to march or to gather in this heat,” the Takoma Park Independence Day Committee said in a letter announcing the cancellation.
Organizers said they look forward to bringing the community together again for next year’s Fourth of July celebration.
