Tradition Like No Other: 99-Year-Old Fan Celebrates Birthday With Her Beloved Commanders

A 99-year-old Silver Spring woman celebrated her birthday the only way she knows how: with the Washington Commanders.

It’s become an annual tradition for Melba Jacobsen to celebrate her birthday with the Commanders at training camp in Ashburn, Va.. Since she was 90 years old, Jacobsen has attended practice on her birthday, according to ESPN’s John Keim.

Commanders players got in on the fun as well. Rookie players were designated to serenade the near-100-year-old with a chorus of Happy Birthday. This year, rookies like Emmanuel Forbes crowded around Jacobsen and put on the performance of the year.

“I’m happy because I am in good health and because I can come out here and maybe again next year,” Jacobsen told ABC7’s Scott Abraham.
