Summertime offers kids so many camps to choose from. One of the more unique camps was recently hosted at the Rockville studios of Montgomery Community Media.
The Play By Play Sports Broadcasting Camp held a weeklong session where campers were exposed to all types of sports media coverage.
Participants learned the basics of sports broadcasting. That included play-by-play announcing, sports anchoring, interviewing athletes, sideline reporting, sports talk radio and social media coverage.
“I’ve never liked playing sports with balls,” camper Tenley Fitzsimmons said. “I’ve never liked playing basketball or soccer, but I’ve always been very interested in the rules and statistics of it. So, I thought this would be fun because I don’t actually have to play it, but I get to be involved in it.”
Camp organizers said their goal is to expose students to a wide range of broadcasting skills while helping them develop confidence and connections within the industry.
“We give them all the different skill sets to be able to practice on their own,” Camp Director Neil Hartman said. “We give them tremendous guests that come to all our camps, and they hear from those professionals. Then they decide that’s something they really want to do because these kids love sports. They want to be around sports, and we’re here to help.”
