Union Members Disrupt Council’s Teacher Appreciation Day Proclamation

Montgomery County Councilmembers abruptly ended an event recognizing teachers after disruptions from union members.

The council planned to present a proclamation during Tuesday’s session recognizing Teacher Appreciation Day, led by Vice President Andrew Friedson, and Councilmembers Gabe Albornoz, Will Jawando and Kristin Mink.

During remarks, Montgomery County Education Association (MCEA) President Jennifer Martin urged councilmembers to fully fund the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) operating budget, which the council will take up on Friday.

MCEA members gave councilmembers a petition “with over 9,000 signatures,” urging the same, according to Martin.

“By seeking to make cuts in the MCPS budget, you all continue to reveal that you are not willing to do everything that is necessary for our kids, our communities or our future,” Martin said. Last week, a council committee moved to reduce some requested funding for MCPS’ budget.

Councilmembers reading their proclamation were interrupted by chants of “let her speak” and “let him speak” as union members tried to make remarks and filled the space before the dais.

After letting one teacher speak, who also urged fully funding the MCPS budget, Jawando eventually stated that the proclamation was over amid chanting during his reading.

“This proclamation was because we want to recognize and honor you,” Council President Evan Glass said.

When the chanting did not stop, Glass announced the body was in recess. Councilmembers resumed their session soon after.

The proclamation ceremony can be viewed during the council’s livestream below. Martin’s remarks begin at 55:30.
