Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center is hosting a special reduced-fee event Feb. 14 and 15 to help find homes for large dogs, that are typically not adopted as frequently as smaller canines, according to agency officials.

The event, called “Find Your Better Half,” runs from noon to 5 p.m. this Valentine’s Day weekend at the shelter, located at 7315 Muncaster Mill Road. It focuses on dogs weighing more than 40 pounds, with adoption fees reduced for the holiday weekend to help move animals into permanent homes.

With nearly 80 large dogs in need of placement, the shelter is operating at critical capacity and is urging county residents and prospective pet owners to consider adoption during this event.

Adoption fees are determined by the age of the canine.

  • Dogs under 6 months: $75
  • Dogs 6 months and older: $50
  • Dogs over 7 years old: $37.50

All adoptions are processed on a first-come, first-served basis. Potential adopters should be prepared for possible wait times, advises Animal Services. Adoptions are completed the same day; visitors should bring a leash and collar or harness so their new dog can go home immediately.

Prospective adopters are encouraged to visit the shelter’s website to view available animals and understand the adoption process before attending the event.

The Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center is the county’s only open-admission municipal shelter and provides care, sheltering and veterinary services for homeless, abused and neglected animals. Through education, adoptions and outreach, the center advocates for responsible pet ownership and serves as a resource for the community.
