Westwood Pet Center in Bethesda Closes After 42 Years

After 42 years in business, Westwood Pet Center will close its doors on June 30. The store, located in the Westwood Shopping Center in Bethesda, has been family-owned and operated since 1972.

Dave Griffin, 63, opened the store when he was 21 years old. His work in the pet food industry and passion for animals inspired him to open his own business. As Westwood Pet Center became more rooted in the Bethesda community, Griffin’s family worked at the store and helped it thrive. Now, Griffin and his son, Spencer, co-run the store together.

“It’s been very, very cool growing up in the store,” manager Spencer Griffin, Dave’s son, told MyMCM. “From starting as a stock boy at about 11 years old, I’ve done kind of everything here. There’s been a countless number of animals at this store, and a countless number of memories.”

According to Spencer Griffin, Westwood Pet Center’s closure is the result of a few factors: the shopping center’s upcoming reconstruction, the pandemic’s harsh economic impact and his father’s decision to retire. However, the family may open a new location at the Shops at Sumner Place, also in Bethesda.

“There’s a potential for us to reopen on [Sangamore Road], but we’re still in the talks over there,” he said.

Over its more than four decades, Westwood Pet Center has transformed from selling fish, reptiles and small animals to selling pet food, treats and other products. The store’s loyal customers adapted alongside the store, especially during the pandemic. Even as the store closes, the Griffin family is grateful.

“We just want the community to know that we appreciate all the support over the past 42 years,” Spencer Griffin said. “It’s been an honor to support the community and serve them. Without them, none of this would have been possible.”
