Woman found guilty of carjacking, shooting in Chevy Chase

A woman who lost her shoe while running away from an attempted carjacking was found guilty by a Montgomery County Circuit Court jury.

Roniyah Thomas, 21, of District Heights, will be sentenced June 26 on charges of attempted carjacking, first-degree assault, armed robbery and use of a firearm in the commission of a violent crime.

She faces a maximum of 95 years in prison, according to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s office.

During the Feb. 4, 2025 incident, Thomas pointed a gun at a man and demanded his car keys, according to the State’s Attorney’s office. As the victim exited his car in the area of South Park Avenue and the Hills Plaza in Chevy Chase, he pushed the gun away.

Thomas fired, shooting the victim in the leg. She fled but left behind her black sneaker.

Montgomery County Police worked with Metro Transit Police in reviewing surveillance video from the nearby Friendship Heights Metro Station around the time of the shooting. A passenger can be seen in the video running into the station without a shoe on her left foot. After passing through the turnstile, she is seen removing her right shoe as well.

Metro police searched the Smart Trip card, which turned out to be a DC student card belonging to a seven-year-old.  The emergency contact name attached to the card was Thomas’, according to court records.
