2 County Rocketry Teams Soar to Finals

Two Montgomery County student teams will compete in the national finals of the American Rocketry Challenge.

Students from Wheaton High School and Explorer Post 1010 in Rockville will compete May 18 in The Plains, Virginia. The winning team receives an all-expense trip to the International Rocketry Challenge in July at the Farmborough Air Show in England.

To get to the finals, these students competed against 920 teams from 45 states.

Each team had to design, build and launch model rockets that safely carry one large hen egg to an altitude of 850 feet. The rocket must stay airborne for between 43 and 46 seconds and then return safely using parachutes.

The competition is sponsored by Aerospace Industries Association, the National Association of Rocketry, and more than 20 industry partners.
