5 Things to Know Today, Aug. 25, In Montgomery County

Today is Wednesday, Aug. 25 and here are five things to know in Montgomery County.

1. Hyperthermia Alert: Montgomery County is under a Hyperthermia Alert from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. County Emergency Management issues the alert when temperatures/heat index is forecast to be at least 95 degrees. These conditions are hazardous and the county says heat stroke and exhaustion are likely.

See hot weather safety tips from the county and learn signs of heat exposure here. Drink plenty of water, avoid caffeinated or alcoholic drinks, and wear proper protection like light-colored clothing and sunscreen if you must be exposed to the sun.

2. Weekly County Briefing: County Executive Marc Elrich, County Health Officer Dr. Travis Gayles and Acting Assistant Chief Administrative Officer Dr. Earl Stoddard will hold their weekly media briefing at 12:30 p.m. This week, Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Interim Superintendent Dr. Monifa McKnight will join.

3. School Vaccine Clinic: From 9 a.m.- 6 p.m., MCPS students ages 12 and older can receive a COVID-19 vaccine at John F. Kennedy High School in Silver Spring. Make an appointment here.

4. Mental Health Conversation: From 6-8 p.m., residents can join a virtual discussion about mobile crisis intervention services and the Crisis Assistance Helping Out on the Streets (CAHOOTS) model developed by White Bird Clinic. The event is free, open to the public, and no registration is required. Join the conversation on Teams Live or watch live on County Cable Montgomery and the county’s Facebook page.

5. Senior Planet: Senior Planet Montgomery continues to offer free Zoom classes to senior residents. Today’s classes include “Video Chat” and “Hosting A Zoom Meeting.”
