5 Things to Know Today, Feb 13, In Montgomery County

It’s Monday, Feb. 13 and here are five things to know in Montgomery County.

1. Council President Briefing: Council President Evan Glass will meet with the media today at 1:30 p.m to discuss the timeline on the appointments for the Planning Board and Council’s review of Bill 18-22 which would ban gas-powered leaf blowers. The briefing will be streamed on the Council’s Facebook page here.

2. Spring Recreation registration opens today at 6:30 a.m. Programs are available in visual and performing arts, aquatics, fitness, sports and therapeutic recreation. Registration for non-county residents opens Wednesday at 6:30 a.m.

3. Dark Side of the Chew Documentary: Did you know chewing gum is one of the most consumed products in the world and the second most common type of environmental waste? The City of Takoma Park screens the documentary tonight at 7 p.m. in the Community Center Auditorium.

4. STEM at the Library: Children between the ages of 6 and 12 years old will create a Valentine’s Day bracelet with a hidden message using binary code. All supplies are provided and registration is required for today’s event at Olney Library.

5. Black History Month: Montgomery Parks Family Day takes place Saturday, Feb. 18 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Woodlawn Manor Cultural Park in Sandy Spring. The park includes a self-guided exploration of Montgomery County’s Black history. Stop by the Visitor Center to pick up take-home activities (for ages 5-12) and trail maps to explore the Underground Railroad Experience Trail.
