5 Things to Know Today, Jan 16, In Montgomery County

It’s Monday, Jan. 16, and today is Martin Luther King Jr Day. It looks like a sunny day as we honor the Civil Rights leader. Here are five things to know in Montgomery County.

1. Schools Closed: Montgomery County Public Schools and offices are closed today in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

2. Tribute to Dr. King: Montgomery County’s annual celebration takes place at the Music Center at Strathmore today beginning at 4 p.m. The tribute will be televised on County Cable Montgomery (Xfinity/RCN 6 HD 996/1056 | Fios 30). MCM will broadcast the tribute on cable channels 21 and HD 995.

3. County and City Holiday Closures: The county and municipalities observe the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday today. Many offices and programs are closed today.

4. Ride On Delays on Wayne Avenue: Starting today, and lasting for approximately 18 months, construction for the Purple Line will impact Wayne Avenue between Fenton Street and Sligo Creek Parkway. The two curbside lines of this four-lane road will be closed for sidewalk construction work from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. on weekdays and weekends as needed. Riders should be prepared for service delays on Routes 12, 15, and 19.

5. Park Clean Up: Montgomery Parks is looking for volunteers to help with removal of non-native, invasive plans and picking up litter to keep it out of the streams.
