5 Things to Know Today, March 4, In Montgomery County

Today is Friday, March 4 and here are five things to know in Montgomery County.

1. Silver Spring Apartment Fire:  The investigation into Thursday’s apartment explosion and fire continues today.  Officials are scheduled to provide an update at 9 a.m. which MyMCM will stream live on our Facebook page.

MyMCM spoke with displaced residents and officials about the tragedy.

2. Emergency Shelter: The White Oak Recreation Center is providing emergency shelter for the approximately 100 residents displaced by the apartment explosion and fire. Programs and activities scheduled through Sunday, March 6 are being relocated or canceled, with the exception of Friday’s Club Adventure after-school program. Today’s senior activities and meals will be relocated to the Margaret Schweinhaut Senior Center. Basketball games scheduled for Saturday, March 5 will take place at the Marilyn Praisner Recreation Center.

Anyone who wants to help the families who have lost everything is encouraged to make a donation on the nonprofit Making Home Possible web page.

3. Josiah Henson Parkway:  Montrose Parkway will be renamed in honor of Rev. Josiah Henson today at 9 a.m. The ceremony will be held at the intersection of Montrose Parkway and Stonehenge Place in North Bethesda. The street runs through the Riley Plantation where Henson was enslaved.

4. Outdoor Happy Hour:  Montgomery Parks fourth and final winter outdoor happy hour takes place tonight at the Acorn Urban Park in Silver Spring from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Enjoy craft beer from Silver Branch Brewing, food from Big Greek Food Truck, and live music by Ted Garber. Join in outdoor games for the whole family.

5. Vaccine Clinics: The county is holding six school-based clinics for pediatric second COVID-19 vaccine and booster shots Saturday and Sunday, March 4 and 5. Appointments are recommended.
