5 Things to Know Today, Sept. 14, In Montgomery County

It is Tuesday, Sept. 14, and it is National Ants on a Log Day. To celebrate, get a piece of celery, rub peanut butter on it, and add raisins. Voila! As you enjoy your healthy snack, here are five things to know in Montgomery County.

1. Council in Session: Montgomery County Council is back from its recess and meets virtually at 9 a.m. The council is expected to receive a media briefing from Montgomery County Public Schools about quarantine guidelines and protocols. Here is a look at the full agenda. The meeting will be televised on County Cable Montgomery Channels Comcast HD 996 and SD6, RCN HD 1056 and SD 6, and Verizon 30. Additionally, it will be live-streamed on the council’s Facebook and Youtube channels

2. Jawando Media Briefing: Councilmember Will Jawando and State Del. Jheanelle Wilkin are addressing members of the media in Silver Spring at 12:30 p.m. The two will discuss Bill 30-21 which aims to “build upon expedited legislation passed by the Council last April 2020 in response to the COVID-19 rental crisis.”

3. Reckoning with Racist History: The Montgomery County Lynching Memorial Project and the Gaithersburg Community Museum hosts a discussion on the legacy of lynching and racial terrorism in the county tonight from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The free event takes place at the pavilion in Gaithersburg’s Bohrer Park. Registration is required.

4. Combatting Truancy:  Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy is hosting a truancy prevention training this morning. The volunteers will be tasked with going to 18 public schools to work with students who are at high risk for truancy. Here’s a look at the Truancy Prevention Program’s virtual spring ceremony:

5. Book Discussion: Check out a Wheaton Library book discussion virtually at 11 a.m. You’ll be discussing “The Book of Delights: Essays” by the poet Ross Gay. Click here to register.
