District 3, which encompasses Rockville and Gaithersburg, has become a hotbed of county council candidates. On Monday, Jim McNulty, recently reelected to the Gaithersburg City Council, announced his candidacy for an At-Large seat to the Montgomery County Council.
The two-time city councilmember said he plans to focus his campaign on a “common sense approach,” according to a statement. He hopes to fill a need for practical leadership on the county level.
Drawn to public service after surviving the 2010 terror attack at the Discovery Channel, McNulty cites his advocacy for issues like smart growth, pedestrian safety and improvement to transportation services.
Job creation and affordable housing, and getting local government “to live within its means” will also be high on his agenda if elected.
McNulty joins Gaithersburg Mayor Jud Ashman, Rockville City Councilmember Izola Shaw, political newcomer Allison Eriksen, and C&T Electrical owner Crista Tichy in their campaigns for county council. All have expressed interest in or filed to run for the Council in 2026 from District 3.
Three At-Large seats will have vacancies with Gabe Albornoz vacating his seat to resume his prior role as recreation director, and the bids for County Executive by Evan Glass and Andrew Friedson.
