Police charge two juveniles with car thefts

A Montgomery County Police Department drone assisted in the arrest of two male juveniles charged with stealing cars.

The arrests occurred during a theft-from-auto enforcement detail.

First District Special Assignment Team members were conducting a proactive enforcement detail along the Norbeck Road corridor on Dec. 4 at 3:30 p.m., due to a recent increase in thefts from vehicles. Kias and Hyundais were being used as getaway cars, according to police.

As part of the detail, an officer saw two Hyundai sedans headed east on Norbeck Road. The cars appeared to be following each other, according to police. The drivers soon parked in a residential neighborhood on Gloria Way in Gaithersburg.

Officers determined both Hyundais had been stolen.

Police then deployed the drone, which located occupants from both vehicles as they attempted to open the doors of several parked vehicles before getting back into the stolen Hyundais and leaving the area.

Officers stopped one of the stolen vehicles and took the occupants into custody. The officers located a loaded Glock 19 9mm handgun in the waistband of one of the suspects. The handgun’s serial number was obliterated. The gun previously had been reported stolen.

One juvenile was charged with theft of more than $1,500 and illegal possession of a handgun. He was charged as an adult and has since been released.
